The Christchurch Story
This session will focus on the historical significance of cycling in Christchurch, the impact of the 2010/11 earthquakes as an opportunity for the city to be revitalised through the Central City Recovery Plan and the delivery of a new connected cycleway network across the city.
The Central City Recovery Plan provided a strategic framework for future transport network planning for Christchurch City. This network planning has included the implementation of a cycleway network that is being realised by the An Accessible City and Major Cycleways programmes of work. These $NZ 200M programmes of work are currently being delivered with the support of Central Government funding initiatives and will provide dedicated routes for cyclists that are safer, attractive to cyclists and intended to achieve a significant modal shift to active travel options. The session will include examples of the routes completed to date and the specific features of those routes that will encourage people to adopt cycling as a transport choice.
