Abstract Title: 5 years of advanced nursing in the children's emergency department (CED)
This session will explore 2 perspectives of the advanced nursing role (CNS and NP) in an emergency department. CED introduced the clinical nurse specialist role 5 years ago with a clear expectation it would result in a team of experienced nurse practitioners who would work independently, within the MDT, to provide specialized paediatric emergency care. The aim being to improve patient outcomes, enhance departmental functioning and provide a pathway for nursing advancement. This session explores the motivation for this, the rationale for and logistics of decisions made around CNS/NP team functioning, the barriers and benefits of introducing the role and an insight into the perspective of the nurse transitioning from RN to CNS to NP.
